In Ariege,
the heart of the Couserans

We are running three guided walking tours and an Easter mini-break in the Pyrenees this year, based in the Couserans, a beautiful region in the foothills of Mount Valier. There are miles of high mountain walks, woodland, lowland pastures, rivers and pretty stone villages.

Our tours are based in our chambres d'hôtes, a converted 200-year-old mansion with its own park, in the village of Castillon en Couserans.

We are well placed to explore the Couserans as the village is at the mouth of three valleys: Bellelongue, Biros and Bethmale.

Spring starts in the lowlands in May, but in the mountains regions it does not come until mid-June.

After the snow has melted, the high mountains come alive with wild flowers, edible berries, birds, butterflies, roe deer and wild boar.

Saint Jean Tour

(A Walking and painting week)

22 - 29 june 2008
20 - 27 June 2009 (7 nights)

Walking grade two--
Price: €920 per person (without flight) Single supplement €120

N.B This tour is running in conjunction with the painting tour. This means that couples can come for the same week but not participate in the same activity. The two activities are split up, meaning that this is not a walking and painting week, but a week where each person chooses their activity at the start of the tour. It will however be possible for art students to join in if they wish, or for students to go off on their own for a couple of hours at the end of the day.  There will be plenty of opportunities in the evening to be together, but during the day the two groups will be split up to concentrate on their chosen activity.

The celebration of St Jean is the official start of summer in the Biros valley.

As we explore the mountains behind the valleys of Biros and Bethmal we will meet shepherds working with their flocks, learn about their patou dogs, the brown bears, and the varied flora and fauna.

There will be an opportunity to try and buy local delicacies at organic farms; we will visit a sorbet and jam producer and a cheese factory.

On one of the evenings, we are invited to a feast with the local community; afterwards we gather round a bonfire, lit as a tribute to the summer sun. Young couples in traditional costume dance to haunting music, a centuries-old tradition. We can join in these celebrations, experiencing something of the way of life in this remote, high mountain area of the Couserans.

Special aspects of the tour:

  • participating in the festival of Saint Jean (Sent Joan)

  • visiting several markets; observing dances and music performed by the 'Biroussans'

  • meeting local people; hearing of their way of life in the Couserans

  • looking out for wildlife in the area; including a talk about the brown bears

Walking grade three --

Price: € 1050 per person without flight Single supplement €140

Non-walking partners welcome Price: €745 per person

This is the third year we have run this tour. We have chosen late August to invite you to explore the high Couserans. It is at this time of the year that the high mountains are at their best. The summer heat has gone and in the cooler, sunny days the mountains come back to life.
We will take you to our favourite places, where few people go: highland pastures, where we might see bearded vultures, golden eagles and the mountain chamois (or isard) among many other unusual animals and plants.
During the week we explore lesser-known peaks, secret lakes, mines and deserted villages behind the Biros and Bethmale valleys.

One of the highlights of this tour is a beautiful and contrasting walk over into Spain to the Val d'Aran, where we spend the night, returning to France via the peak of Maubermé. We also climb the famous Mount Valier peak (2838m).

Special aspect of the tour:

  • two two-day expeditions: one into Spain staying the night at Montgari refuge; the second, on the way up to the Mount Valier peak, staying the night at Estagnous refuge
